Protecting Simcoe North’s Water: Join the Fight on June 8

Simcoe North Greens proudly support Save Our Water Tiny (SOWT) in the fight to protect Ontario’s water by promoting rallies on June 8 at the constituency offices of MPPs Jill Dunlop and Doug Downie. With the Auditor General’s report highlighting Ontario’s mismanagement of aggregate resources, SOWT is calling for a moratorium on existing extraction at French’s Hill until the Elmvale Groundwater Study—critical to understanding water purity—is completed.

Simcoe North Greens are proud to support Save Our Water Tiny by promoting the rallies organized for Saturday, June 8, at the constituency offices of MPP Jill Dunlop in Orillia and MPP Doug Downie in Barrie. (details below)

Add your face and your voice to the provincial Day of Action to Protect Ontario from Gravel Mining, organized by the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition (RGMC). Six months ago the Auditor General's scathing report concluded that Ontario's management of aggregate resources is in crisis.

Of particular concern here in Simcoe North is the site known as French's Hill, the primary location of the Elmvale Groundwater Study. It's crucial to clearly understand whether aggregate extraction is compromising water purity. We know that Simcoe North has cleanest water ever discovered with no evidence of human activity and is the global benchmark for water purity. Because of this, Save Our Water Tiny (SOWT) demand for a moratorium is different from the RGMC. Rather than a moratorium on new mines, SOWT is seeking a moratorium on existing activities until such time as the Elmvale Groundwater Study can be completed so activities do not disrupt this vital research.

As SOWT joins other residents’ groups across Ontario as part of the Day of Action in demanding a moratorium, these groups are also insisting that following the Auditor General’s recommendations are a step in the right direction.

The recommendations and moratorium need your voice added to the call that they be implemented. Community participation can change policy to protect water and food security, the climate, and public health. The study underway at French's Hill already reveals invaluable scientific knowledge that needs to be taken into consideration.

Should you wish to add your voice, join the rally at 10am in Barrie at the office of MPP Doug Downie: 20 Bell Farm Rd

and 2pm in Orillia at the Office of Jill Dunlop: 575 West St. S.
